Yes, when I was eleven I was in love with stars and faeries, right after I came to Argentina. These kind of hilltops and mountains still haunt my dreams sometimes. I realized though, I've gotten better at this poetry thing, I guess. I was in love with Beowulf and Harry Potter, and this thirst for magic continued until the ending of the Lord of the Rings and the beginning of The Children of Hurin. This thirst continues to this day.
Forgive my impetu prose and simple writing. I was barely eleven, and tasting out forms of poetry.
The Blessed Star
As minutes draw on, ticking and passing,
From a drawing cloud came by
A proud star above my head
Bright against the dark sky.
It lay burning, white fire yearning
For its story to be heard
I sat upon the grass, and then a face passed
Honest and desperately blurred
It ran to the trees, like a summer breeze
Among birches young and green
“Please wait! Why do you fly away?
Fair maiden who I have seen!”
And she halted curiously, stopped and looked at me
“Can you see me?” she asked silently
With wondered merit, gazing at her presence
I only nodded awkwardly.
She smiled gently, beckoned me intently
I sat down with her in lawns fresh
And before me shone the brightest star,
That sent a shiver through my flesh
I asked her what she was, intrigued with the
Glorious being before me;
She only sang in a voice as subtle as water,
Yet, as strong as the sea.
And from the purple skies a light came bright
She smiled and took my hand,
Though I could not see where she led me
I opened my eyes to a strange land.
Planets colliding, suns golden flashing
And all that was living was good.
But upon her face, filled with peculiar grace
She led me beyond hills and woods.
Upon a lonely mountain, sprinkled with fountains
With mutilated statues, faces in sadness,
She showed me a great room, filled with gloom
Covered in glass and mirrors and clocks affectless.
And then I saw, filled with awe
The brightest stars I have ever seen.
She was the keeper of stars and light
Great wonder, of misery and beauty.
Upon her skies, stars bright and white
And I wondered, naïve, why should she not be glad?
Creator of beauty and wonder,
Why must her wise eyes be sad?
And then she revealed, among stars-strewn fields
That the stars where the souls of those who had passed,
Of those who had left a loved one,
And rest in skies with memories of the past.
I understood with a chill, though I never truly will,
How deep her misery must be,
And for once I wished she would be freed,
And forever in friendship be with me.
She laughed a merry tune, gleaming like the moon
Yet fairer than the moon in my eyes,
And offered to take me back home,
And to say our last goodbye.
And then in gleam, like a bittersweet dream,
She looked upon a newly made star
I looked upon its glow, a glow I knew…
A glow I recalled from afar.
And then it came to me, so suddenly
I could not suppress a gasp
It was my father, with brightness like no other,
I cried the coldest tears I could grasp
The silver spirit, with lonely merit
Only looked at me with sympathy
As she raised her hands up to the heavens
No matter how much I would plead.
And up went my father’s soul, into the unknown
With peacefulness he never had bore,
I only looked at him achingly as he was raised
To where the slipped away had gone before.
Such woe, I have never known
Such pain, I have never felt
My tears fell upon that blessed earth
And became flowers where the fair folk dwelt.
I felt a hand, as smooth as sand
Touch my shoulder gently as to go
She guided me away, away from the fair place
Her breath sweet bathed in evening glow.
So again we parted, heavy hearted
I passed those fields, though they could not cure my pain.
And yet again, with reddened eyes,
I wished for my father in vain.
And when we arrived, she did not arise
But stayed with me yet a while.
I sat with her in silence,
Only comforted by her saddened smiles.
And all our tears, small they appeared,
Spoke louder than words could say
I knew that my time with her was ending;
I would be back to my home, old and grey
Joyless I was then, just as I began
But longing for exotic lands no more,
So I journeyed with my fair friend,
With sore feet stepped the soil of my home
I gazed upon her, and as it were,
I realized that I had not known her name!
How could I have not asked her?
Bright soul shining in white flame
My thoughts she read, and only said
With a golden air and silver words
“I am the southwestern star, brightest of all
And bringer of beauty to your world”
She was the evening and the morning star
So beautiful to stare and admire,
Sent forth by the angels from heaven
Lighting my way and desires.
A peculiar sight to other’s eyes,
Just a normal girl and an otherworldly being,
But no one could ever see,
All the beauty and wisdom I was seeing.
All that I have learned, all the knowledge I have earned
Were rendered useless to what she taught me
That fateful night, with dawn creeping in sight
Would shape what I came to be.
“I have seen souls wasted, who have never tasted
The joyful sweetness of life.
Those who have fought for nothing
Or empty headedness and strife.
Do not waste your chance, never glance
Back at the things that have come to pass
Because before you know it, your clock’s hit,
And that day might be your last.
Do not cherish seen things, for they only bring
An empty heart and a restless soul
Relish those who you love, do not weep for lost ones
For they are still with you, their love you own.
I am with you, forever in you,
And in your eyes my love will shine,
When you look up at the night sky
Remember me, friend of mine”
But dawn was creeping, the owls were sleeping
And she faded away before I said goodbye
Clinging to hope, I searched for her
And saw her as a star on the morning sky.
The sky was blue, with purple hues
As the sun raised his beams of gold
The trees were like colored rooftops
It was cool, but I felt no cold.
The clouds were raised, beginning of day
She hung about the sky twinkling
Until the sun had arisen
And her light began fading.
I never forgot, what that maiden had brought
Into this humbled heart of mine.
And now I live everyday like my last
With her teachings upon a shrine.
And I still dream, I might catch a beam
A light from the past that I recall,
Of her flaming tongues of metallic sheen
And I would hear her sweet voice call.
And would you believe it? Upon the quiet
Forests that I roamed at the end of day,
I came upon a blank field
Where I saw her among mists of grey
And in her eyes, in her starry disguise
A familiar smile lied upon her face
And I knew, she could see me too,
All this time, our friendship we still could trace.
But she fleeted, discrete, among a starry sea
And left me a silver chain upon my hand
“Look for me in the horizon” it said,
And it trailed me back to that blessed land.
So here I am.
